A common thread which connects many of California’s wine regions is their sudden and dramatic rise in popularity. Consider, for instance, that up until the 1970s Napa was mostly known for its insane asylum, and walnuts commanded a higher price per ton than Cabernet Sauvignon grapes! This month we will compare and contrast two regions that are enjoying their relatively newfound popularity: Paso Robles and Lake County. We will look at how Cabernet Sauvignon performs in these varying climates and dive a bit into the history of these regions, including the dark days of Prohibition and their triumphant return. In addition, this will be a lesson in the concept of terroir, or how climate and soil type play a major role in the making of these wines!
