“Let me tell you now I don’t know; I don’t know. I don’t know where I’m a gonna go when the volcano blows…” I remember hearing this classic Jimmy Buffett song in the mid-1980s at a concert I attended in the old Orlando Convention Center when I first moved to Florida. I thought to myself, who wants to live near a volcano? It turns out lots of people do, and some of them even make wine. Yes, you guessed it, the theme of this month’s selections is volcanos, or more specifically, wines made from vines that grow on them. This quarter, we will examine one from an active volcano, one recently dormant (in Earth years) and one that is cold and quiet. Their impact on the wines that are made is profound and pervasive throughout, which you will smell and taste. For all three features this quarter, I recommend decanting these wines for half an hour and serving them at cellar temperature: 55 degrees, not ice cold.
