On Saturday, May 24th from 2 to 5 pm we will be hosting another “pop up” distributor tasting featuring our friend Melissa Barnes of Terroir Imports. This is a fantastic portfolio featuring many TWM top sellers but on this day we will focus on one brand, the wines of Caterina Dei and her amazing estate in Montepulicano, Tuscany.
I like to think of myself as an early adopter of these wines, buying their 1990 vintage Vino Nobile di Montepulciano when we first opened, and serving it at our VIP grand opening party in 1995. The estate was established in 1964 by Caterina’s grandfather, Alibrando, who knew of the historical significance of the region. While less well known today than the wines of their famous neighbor Montalcino, throughout history those of Montepulciano were held in higher esteem. In fact, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was one of the first DOCG created in Italy in 1980. Alibrando guided this estate until 1991 when Caterina assumed the helm, as one of the first female winemakers in Italy. Since then she has guided this property to top marks not just for Vino Nobile, but all of Tuscany. The current 2019 is one of my favorite wines in the store and I believe a top value compared to many wines that sell for 2-3X in price.
For this tasting we will be sampling their amazing Rosato, her ground breaking white wine Martiena, as well as top selling Rosso di Montepulciano and flagship Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This is a free event so stop by anytime. If you are like us and staying home this holiday weekend it is a great chance to take a brief virtual trip to Tuscany. We will also serve cheese and charcuterie as well.
