DESCRIPTION:Before the wars\, the wines of the Alto Piedmont region were every bit as popular as those of Barolo and Barbaresco\, located one hour to the south. Then\, phylloxera\, a devastating frost in 1915\, and the explosion of factory jobs in nearby Milan after the wars devastated this rural region. As a result\, many wineries closed their doors as the younger generations headed for the big city. \nIn the 1990s\, several estates were resurrected by enthusiasts who discovered the rich history of the region. One such estate is Proprietà Sperino\, in the commune of Lessona\, owned by the de Marchi family. The de Marchi family was not new to wine\, having previously owned Isole e Olena in Chianti Classico before they undertook the redevelopment of this estate. Today\, the wines from Proprietà Sperino are regarded as some of the most exciting offerings from the region and serve as a great alternative for fans of Barolo and Barbaresco. \nOn this evening\, we will be tasting three wines with owner/winemaker Luca de Marchi as he guides us through the differences between this region and the better-known Langhe Valley. All of the winemakers explained that the warmer climate was forcing them to plant red varieties that can handle the heat.
