DESCRIPTION:It is hard to believe\, but in the early 1990s\, I fought harder for allocations of the great Zinfandels of California than for any other wines. The single vineyard wines from Ridge\, Rosenblum\, and a handful of others would sell out instantly\, but none were more desired than those from Ravenswood. Alas\, owner/winemaker Joel Peterson sold the winery in 2001 for $148 million. Since then\, his son\, Morgan Twain Peterson\, has carried on the legacy with his excellent Bedrock Wines. Now Joel is back\, producing limited quantities of wines under his new label\, Once and Forever. I tasted these wines a few weeks ago\, and they are amazing. The best part is they can’t really raise prices\, despite tariffs\, because they need to sell wine. As a result\, you can find ten-year-old bottles that have been recently released and are selling for a fraction of what they should. For this tasting we will look at 6 red wines\, all at least 6 years old and sell for less than $50 per bottle. Also\, for those looking for red wines that are not as high in alcohol as domestic Cabs\, this is a great place to discover new full flavored reds but with lower ABV.

DESCRIPTION:Before the wars\, the wines of the Alto Piedmont region were every bit as popular as those of Barolo and Barbaresco\, located one hour to the south. Then\, phylloxera\, a devastating frost in 1915\, and the explosion of factory jobs in nearby Milan after the wars devastated this rural region. As a result\, many wineries closed their doors as the younger generations headed for the big city. \nIn the 1990s\, several estates were resurrected by enthusiasts who discovered the rich history of the region. One such estate is Proprietà Sperino\, in the commune of Lessona\, owned by the de Marchi family. The de Marchi family was not new to wine\, having previously owned Isole e Olena in Chianti Classico before they undertook the redevelopment of this estate. Today\, the wines from Proprietà Sperino are regarded as some of the most exciting offerings from the region and serve as a great alternative for fans of Barolo and Barbaresco. \nOn this evening\, we will be tasting three wines with owner/winemaker Luca de Marchi as he guides us through the differences between this region and the better-known Langhe Valley. From those humble beginnings\, he recognized the need to highlight the incredible terroir of the Willamette Valley by crafting the first single-vineyard Pinot Noirs. Today\, Ken produces over 20 different single-vineyard wines each year\, demonstrating the range and complexity of this fascinating region. On this evening\, we will sample six of his wines\, including two terroir-influenced wines and at least three single-vineyard wines\, while Ken regales us with stories and facts. DESCRIPTION:I am not sure if importer Kermit Lynch himself knows how many wines he imports to the U.S. The winery list on their website includes at least 197\, and some producers make more than a dozen wines. Suffice it to say that even the most determined distributors cannot keep up\, resulting in some wines getting lost. This tasting will feature five of those wines\, spanning his extensive portfolio from Southern France and even a couple from Italy. The emphasis will be on bottles under $30\, but there may be a special bottle or two above that. No tickets or reservations are needed; just show up!
