Natural Wines – When Winemakers Let It All Hang Out

Location: Orlando Venue: Orange Avenue Store

Address: 1223 North Orange Ave Orlando, FL 32804

Cost: $25 per person/Club members $20

Start: March 29 @ 7:00 pm | End: March 29 @ 9:00 pm

“One fault bad, three faults good” and “man makes wine, God makes vinegar.”  These are common statements you hear about the “natural” wine movement, and at times they are not without merit.  Yet this movement is gaining a lot of ground, especially in the sommelier communities of New York and San Francisco.  My own tasting experience is has taught me that I find many good examples, a few great, and more than a couple awful wines.  On this evening I will be showing you eleven wines that I have found are exceptional, and happen to be made with minimal winemaker intervention.  If you are interested in tasting a very honest, pure expression of wine, then don’t miss this class.

The Educated Consumer –
Getting the most out of the wines you drink

Location: Orlando Venue: Orange Avenue Store

Address: 1223 North Orange Ave Orlando, FL 32804

Cost: $25/Members $20

Start: April 5 @ 7:00 pm | End: April 5 @ 9:00 pm

This is the class for those of you who like wine but wish you knew more about it.  In The Educated Consumer we examine the building blocks of wine; acidity, sweetness, minerality, alcohol, tannin and oak and how they work to make a complete and balanced wine.  We will also teach you how to describe what you drink and understand the difference between a bad wine and one that simply does not suit your taste.  In addition we  cover how wine is produced and successfully paired with food.

Eleven Great Wines You Would Never Buy,
But You Should Taste

Location: Orlando Venue: Orange Avenue Store

Address: 1223 North Orange Ave Orlando, FL 32804

Cost: $25 per person/Club members $20

Start: April 12 @ 7:00 pm | End: April 12 @ 9:00 pm

If you tasted 4000-5000 wines a year like I do, then the highlights are not the run-of-the-mill Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays that pay the bills.  The wines that stand out to me are those made by small producers, in obscure places, from grapes that are anything but common.  These are the bottles that make selling wine interesting, especially when I get to tell their stories as well.

For this tasting we will be sample eleven wines that have no commonality, except that they are all amazing, and pure expressions of their place or variety.  We will examine whites from obscure French and Italian regions, as well as the cutting edge reds coming from Austria, Germany, Spain, South America and South Africa. I have not set the exact tasting line-up yet, but the wines will be cool and definitely a learning experience.

Napa vs. Sonoma vs. the World
A blind comparative tasting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot

Location: Orlando Venue: Orange Avenue Store

Address: 1223 North Orange Ave Orlando, FL 32804

Cost: $25 per person/Club members $20

Start: April 19 @ 7:00 pm | End: April 19 @ 9:00 pm

I have noticed a funny thing in my notes lately.  For years in my tastings I would recognize a Napa bottling due to a certain level of polish or complexity.  Of late the differences are getting harder to find, as winemaking skill, and rising prices, allow many producers in other parts of the world to raise their quality.  For this tasting we will be sampling $20-30 bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot, in a blind format, with one entry from Napa, Sonoma and another up-and-coming place in the world.   Do you think you can tell the difference?  You may be surprised.
